The Future of Slow Streets

The Slow Streets program was one of the few bright spots during an otherwise devastating pandemic. KidSafe supporters – like you – tell us again and again how much we all welcome these transformative spaces.

To hit our mode-share, climate change, and Vision Zero goals, and to just create more spaces to connect with our kids and our neighbors, we need a permanently safe network of Slow Streets across the city.

This fall, the SFMTA Board will hear a proposal and vote on the future of the Slow Streets program. KidSafe SF is participating in a process to develop an advocate-led proposal for this program along with many other advocacy groups and community organizations. We are advocating together for the Board to adopt a citywide program that brings lively, KidSafe streets to all corners of San Francisco.

We are calling on SFMTA, the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors to work together to pursue a path to permanency for this incredibly successful program. This permanent Slow Streets program should:

  1. Build on Success: Approve existing Slow Streets, and improve them with slow infrastructure

  2. Expand Equitably: Pilot flexible community-led projects in equity priority neighborhoods.

  3. Connect the Network: Connect Slow Streets across the city to create a seamless network

Please sign the petition to show your support for keeping our existing Slow Streets and expanding them across the city.

San Francisco needs a safe, connected network of low-traffic streets, people-first promenades, and protected bikeways that allow our kids and families to safely go from school to the park and back home again without needing to drive. Slow Streets – low-speed and low traffic volume streets – will play an important role in that network. Let’s help SFMTA make the easy decision this fall, and approve a better permanent Slow Streets program for the future.
